nb. I use the variometer 'as is' to add inductance at the base of my vertical and it allows me to swing over the band whilst maintaining impedance matching.
The circuit is fed with co-ax and the variometer is in series with the pole (conductor) while keeping the small shunt impedance matching coil at the ground end.
This is not shown in the illustration as I obtained the variometer after the pics were taken.
